Windmills are symbolic of Dutch history and the never-ending battle with the sea, and visiting these beautifully preserved structures is like stepping back in time. Later we return to the cruise ship, where the chef has prepared a sumptuous dinner. We disembark our first-class vessel to spend our last 3 nights in Amsterdam. During our stay, we discover the historic town of Haarlem in the heart of the Netherlands' tulip-growing region and sample one of the country's most famous export, beer. Explore the highlights of Amsterdam and visit the Rijksmuseum - an art lover's paradise with an extensive collection from the Dutch Golden Age. There'll also be plenty of free time to explore as you wish - or relax in the local bars and cafes.

Known as the ‘Gateway to Europe’, it is the largest European cargo port and has been a conduit for trade since the 14th century. Unsurprisingly, its logistical significance made it a target for bombing during the Second World War and its old town was destroyed, with only the Church of Saint Lawrence left standing.
Don't miss a visit to the Grote Kerk, the highly praised collection of paintings in the Dordrechts Museum and the Augustinian monastery Het Hof. Your journey on the Rhine and Meuse concludes in Arnhem, which is best known as a museum city. Here you will be spoilt for choice between the wine museum, the water museum and the open-air museum. Located in the province of Noord-Holland, Alkmaar in the Netherlands is also known as the cheese city of Holland. You should therefore plan a visit to the traditional cheese market as well as a visit to the cheese museum.

Be sure to try some Poffertjes pancakes at a café during your visit as they’re a local delicacy and remember, chips are always served with mayonnaise here. Amsterdam also boasts one of the most celebrated concert halls in the world, the Royal Concertgebouw, which is home to a talented orchestra and some equally exceptional acoustics. The good news for classical fans is that a free concert is held weekly but, even if you’re just curious, it’s worth going along to see for yourself one of the city’s most iconic buildings.

The charm of the largest city in the Netherlands is its unique canal belt, which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its historical significance. Discover the city's many narrow and crooked historic buildings on the waterfront during a walk, bike ride or boat tour. The vibrant metropolis of Flanders combines history and modernity in a more harmonious way than almost any other city in Europe. Here, centuries-old buildings such as the Church of Our Lady, the Steen Castle and the magnificent houses on the Grote Markt combine with many examples of modern architecture, such as the Museum aan het Stroom. Here, old Flemish masters meet a very lively contemporary art scene in the city's art museums.
Art lovers will be immediately drawn to one of the world-famous museums, such as the Rijksmuseum, the Stedelijk Museum or the Van Gogh Museum. Party people will find their happiness in the nightlife and red light district De Wallen. And beer drinkers should by no means miss the Heineken Experience. Take a memorable river cruise adventure from Amsterdam, Netherlands in 2024. Starting in Amsterdam, you'll glide past imposing medieval castles, lush riverbank vineyards, and remarkable ancient wonders on your European river cruise.
It took a couple of days for the crew to get it working properly. They brought in a IT person who apparently resolved the issue and it worked great on the rest of the trip. The crew, dining room staff and housekeeping staff were all totallydedicated to making our trip as pleasant as possible. The food wasexcellent for each meal.We met a lot of interesting people and enjoyed the company immensely. Thetours were all very informative and worth the effort plus the weather wasgreat for all the tours.Glad we took the trip. Flights cannot be confirmed more than 11 months prior to the date of departure.
The crew tried to hard to resolve the issue and even gave us a bottle of champagne to make up for the problem. On another note, I was pleased to read that Gate 1 Travel will have their own river boat in 2016. We have been happy with all of the trips have taken with Gate 1 Travel.
Betti was awesome & I loved the morning stretch classes & games & dancing in the evening. The ship was immaculate & the staff throughout were attentive & helpful. Wait staff & dining room staff were wonderful.I always love Gate 1 & am looking at another river cruise. It’s a delight to explore, taking in the atmosphere of its little streets and jumble of sailing boats in the harbor. This mammoth engineering achievement now protects low-lying areas from flooding and has allowed the reclamation of 626 square miles of fertile land. Before long, thoughts turn to tonight’s à la carte dinner, served with panache by the restaurant staff, after which why not unwind with a digestif at the bar to the soothing sound of the ship’s pianist.
